ARRIVING THIS WINTER!

The History

In 1999, Agnès and René Mosse sold their wine bar in Tours and moved to the countryside to become vignerons. They settled on a vineyard in Anjou that was left with no successor. Prior to their arrival, the vines had gone through three generations of intensive chemical viticulture. From day one, they started slowly converting the vines parcel by parcel to organic viticulture, until finally converting the vineyards to biodynamics in 2001. In 2010, Agnès and René's sons, Sylvestre and Jo, officially joined the team and have been making the wines since 2014.

Sylvestre and Jo currently work 17 hectares of vines, most of them planted with Chenin Blanc (9HA), and Cabernet Franc (3 HA), the rest planted with Gamay, Chardonnay, Grolleau Gris and Noir.

Expression

What's interesting about the Coteaux-du-Layon area of Anjou is the unique terroir: a small tributary digs its way through well exposed and drained hills of schist and sandstone. Its warm micro-climate followed by fog in the Fall allows the grapes to hang well into September/October and for some to experience botrytis (the noble rot), concentrating the sugars and adding increased complexity to the wines.

At Domaine Mosse, the terroir is showcased. In Sylvester's words, "[they] let the wines make themselves." They focus on growing healthy grapes and press them into neutral barrels. The resulting purity is unmatched: deep, enchanting flavours with power, freshness and length.

When Agnès and René started out, "natural wine," at least the way we speak of it today, did not exist. For them, it was all about working organically in the vines. And, they never intervened in the cellar.

"I never speak of natural wine when asked about our wines. For me, working as well as you can in the vineyard and not intervening in the cellar is the ONLY way to make exceptional wine. If you ask me, I'll tell you it's wine made as naturally as possible. I have no intent in defending "natural wine" or being part of this so called movement. A lot of the stuff coming from these natural winemakers is completely undrinkable and I refuse to be in cahoots with these guys. Quality is what matters. I don't care how your wine was made if it's undrinkable." -  Agnès Mosse

Bright Sky Case

2020 Overmars

100% Chenin Blanc

Textural and honied dry Chenin given 7 to 10 days skin contact without punchdowns. Overmars was a Dutch soccer player, who's national color is orange, a cheeky way to say this is Mosse's orange wine.

Dense, fresh, quite rich - a wine that should be reserved for the table. No fining or filtering.

$45.95/ btl + hst (12pk)

2021 Bangarang

70% Grolleau Noir 30% Gamay

This incredibly popular wine was released for the first time in 2018. A very short 4-day maceration makes it almost a rosé, although they like to call it a “light red”.  Cracked white peppercorn spice that is carried by the brambly fruit - perfect with a slight chill.

The name Bangarang comes from the battle cry of the Lost Boys in the Stephen Spielberg movie, Hook.

$27.95/btl + hst (12pk) *5cs available!

2021 Bisou & 2021 1.5L Bisou

A blend of Grolleau Noir, Pineau d'Aunis, Cot, Gamay, Grolleau Gris and Cabernet Franc, vinified via carbonic maceration

A very light-bodied red - or dark rosé - showing lovely aromas of raspberry and red currant with floral notes. Bright and refreshing with a lovely melange of red fruits.

$34.95/btl + hst (12pk) | $64.95/1.5L bottle (6pk)

2020 Cabernet Franc

100% Cabernet Franc

A blend of two parcels: 30 year old vines from Le Clos de l’Ommeau and 50 year old vines from Les Bonnes Blanches.

Fermented and aged in old Burgundian barrels. Beautiful balance between red fruits, herbs, and a peppery earthiness.
